A quote that is often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi is “Preach the Gospel always, use words if necessary.” Of course words are necessary as reflected in Romans chapter 10: 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" (NIV) But the quote does capture the spirit of James 1:22 and 1 John 3:18 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. (NIV) 3:18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. (NIV) It is important for us to share more than just words. Our lives and ministries must reflect the gospel for our words to be credible. Most of the evangelism opportunity at Jenkins comes out of our outreach ministries. For example, one mission worker came back from doing repair work at an Indian reservation touched by how God used that work project to open doors for the gospel. As people walked by and saw workers up on the roof, an elder of the tribe would introduce the group by saying “these men are here because they love Jesus.” Jenkins has an Evangelism and Mission Education committee that organizes local evangelism efforts and educates the congregation on evangelism projects at the denominational level. This committee is also responsible for oversight of the Men’s ministry and the Women’s ministry at Jenkins. These groups have events which are ideal for bringing newcomers into the church and they also support various outreach projects. The photo at the top of the page is of one of the fellowship breakfasts of the Men’s ministry. |
